Slapper Dave and Darren Pickles formed Supercharger in 1995. Pickles had previously played guitar for the Leeds, England-based band Bush Pilot, before pursuing a career as a hip-hop DJ on Dream FM. Dave played bass in a garage group, the Nearly Band, before joining One, where he earned his nickname as a result of his bass playing style. In 1996 the duo released the Built For Speed EP, produced by Lee Dyson (renowned for his work with the Utah Saints). Posing as DJs, the duo secured a number of bookings at notable venues including the Dubterrania, the Big Shebeen and the Soundclash at Sound City. The success of their live appearances resulted in a major label contract and the release of Spacemaker Deluxe, with the initial pressing selling out within the first two weeks.
