Biography
15 July 1950, Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. James took up his father’s guitar when he was 12 and a few years later was playing bass in a rock ‘n’ roll band. When the blues boom brought Muddy Waters and Mississippi John Hurt to town, he moved from Manhattan to the East Village, worked in a guitar factory and played for coins on the Bowery. He moved to Bristol, Tennessee, in 1973, where he played old-time music and wrote ‘Old Time Country Guitar’. Travelling through the south, he learned first-hand from Bukka White, Walter ‘Furry’ Lewis and R.L. Burnside. While living in Memphis he formed a band with Lum Guffin called the White Hots. In the late 70s, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, working in a museum, doing solo gigs and supporting saxophonist Clifford Scott.
