Biography

Stephen K. Davis, 14 April 1967, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. Raised in Binghamton, New York, Davis began playing trombone at an early age encouraged by his grandparents. His grandmother played jazz piano semi-professionally and his grandfather was a trumpeter and avid collector of jazz records. In school, Davis first played trumpet, then baritone horn and tuba until the age of 14 when he concentrated on the trombone, initially in order to secure a place in the school’s stage jazz band. He played locally in various school jazz bands and also in the Binghamton Youth Symphony Orchestra. He studied at the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, Connecticut, graduating in 1989. He came to the attention of Jackie McLean, studying under and playing with the saxophonist and he also began teaching at McLean’s Artists’ Collective in Hartford. He performed extensively in and around the area, working with bands playing a wide range of music.
