Biography
17 August 1970, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Coles musical life started with the clarinet, playing and listening to the music he heard from his clarinettist/saxophonist fathers record collection. Among the artists who made an early impact in this way were Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley and Stan Kenton. While still in his formative years, Cole decided that he did not care for the clarinet but when his father suggested that he try the tenor saxophone, he quickly found his niche. While still attending high school, he studied under Wayne Richards, a Bordeaux Conservatory trained saxophonist, then went on to Northwestern University where he studied with another classical saxophonist, Fredrick Hemke. His technical skills were now such that he became a prize winner in the Chicago Symphony Orchestras Young Artists competition.
