Biography

31 August 1938, Rochester, New York, USA. Koerner, who earned his nickname due to his previous employment at an automobile shop where he climbed shelves to reach parts, studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Minnesota. He was into his second year as a student before he picked up a guitar for the first time. Bitten by the folk bug, he left college and drove aimlessly around America, enlisting in the US Mariness at one point. When he eventually returned to Minneapolis he met Bob Dylan and, more importantly, Dave Ray. On a visit to Rochester he also met Tony Glover - and with him and Ray formed an acoustic blues trio, Koerner, Ray And Glover. They played the coffee-house circuit together before eventually securing a recording contract with Audiophile Records through contacts at the influential Little Sandy Review magazine.
