Solveig Slettahjell

2 April 1971, Bærum, Norway. Slettahjell grew up in Orkanger, a small town near Trondheim, and began singing in early childhood. She sang in a children’s choir and also studied piano and voice at a Trondheim school. From 1992 she studied at the jazz department of the Norwegian Academy of Music. During this period, she formed a duo with pianist Håkon Hartberg and she also sang in a contemporary pop/soul band, Squid, with which she made her first recording. She also worked with vocalists Eldbjørg Raknes, Kristin Asbjørnsen and Tone Åse, as well as vocal groups vonDrei and Kvitretten, the latter an all-female vocal quartet. She studied further at the Oslo Music Conservatoire and also with noted Norwegian jazz singer Sidsel Endresen. With other Endresen students she sang in Trondheim Voices, including appearing at the 2002 Norwegian Jazz Festival, Nattjazz.
