This duo, also known as the Hired Hands, comprised Dewitt Jenkins (27 October 1908, Harris, Rutherford County, North Carolina, USA, d. 30 April 1990; banjo, guitar, washboard, vocals) and Pappy Sherrill (b. Homer Lee Sherrill, 23 March 1915, Sherrill’s Ford, near Hickory, North Carolina, USA, d. 30 November 2001, Columbia, South Carolina, USA; fiddle, vocals).

Jenkins first played guitar with his fiddle playing brother, Verl, in the late 20s. They later added two other musicians and played for local dances and on WBT Charlotte, as the Jenkins String Band, until 1936. Between 1936 and 1938, he played with J.E. Mainer’s Mountaineers and appeared on several of their Bluebird Records recordings. In 1938, when they were resident at WIS Columbia, Mainer decided to leave.
