Biography

Originating from Louisville, Kentucky, USA, this experimental rock band started off as a mere ‘recording project’, formed in autumn 1996 when Jeff Mueller and Jason Noble (both previously bandmates in a hardcore outfit called Rodan), penned and recorded songs for the NPR programme, This American Life. With both members supplying guitar, bass, and vocals (among other instruments), the duo welcomed drummer Kyle Crabtree into their ranks in spring 1997. The same year, Shipping News signed to the indie label Quarterstick, and issued their debut, Save Everything. The album provided a fine snapshot of Shipping News’ favoured approach, alternating between dreamy hushed sounds and crunching distorted guitar, often during the same composition. The following year saw the trio issue a split EP, and participate in the Mappe Arts Festival in Sicily, Italy.
