Biography
4 September 1891, Russia, d. 5 May 1977, Hollywood, California, USA. Lanins family moved to the USA soon after his birth. He studied clarinet formally with composer Victor Herbert before deciding to form a dance band. Shortly after the end of World War I he took a band into New Yorks popular Roseland Ballroom where he was resident for 13 years. His band included many future stars of jazz and the swing era, amongst them Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Frank Teschemacher, Bix Beiderbecke and Artie Shaw. For several years in the 20s Lanins band was featured on a radio show sponsored by Ipana Toothpaste and his band, known as the Ipana Troubadours, had a substantial following. By the late 30s he had opted to leave centre stage and moved to Florida. Lanin was born into a musical family. He was the third of 10 children, which included a total of six future band leaders.
