Biography
10 February 1944, Sacramento, California, USA. After starting out on trumpet, Reid switched to playing bass during his military service. He played and studied in California for some years, often working in company with leading bop musicians. He also played in Chicago, toured internationally and, in the mid-70s, settled in New York. During the 80s Reid was active as a teacher and writer of tutors. Throughout his professional career Reid has appeared on numerous record dates, playing with musicians such as Kenny Burrell, Stan Getz, Victor Lewis, Kenny Barron, Art Farmer, Jack DeJohnette, Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Heath, Lee Konitz, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis and Howard McGhee. An outstandingly talented bass player, Reid began to attract wider attention after forming a successful and superbly swinging hard bop band, TanaReid, with drummer Akira Tana. He reunited with former Getz quartet members Barron and Lewis in 2007 on Joel Frahm’s We Used To Dance.
