Biography
Aaron Chwatt, 5 February 1919, New York City, New York, USA, d. 13 July 2006, Century City, California, USA. As a child Chwatt sang on the streets until hired as a singing bellhop at Ryan’s where his hair colour and uniform provided his stage name. Entertaining at Catskills’ resorts, his straight man was Robert Alda. He appeared in The Admiral Had A Wife with José Ferrer, a comedy set at Pearl Harbor. It did well out of town and was scheduled to open on Broadway on 8 December 1941, but show was cancelled following the 7 December attack. In 1942, Buttons appeared on Broadway with Ferrer and Uta Hagen in Vicki and was in Wine, Woman And Song at Minsky’s when the venue was raided and closed down. On military service from 1943, Buttons appeared on Broadway in Moss Hart’s Winged Victory and was in the 1944 film version. Buttons also toured war zones entertaining troops with Mickey Rooney.
