Biography
Elliott Charles Adnopoz, 1 August 1931, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. The son of an eminent doctor, Elliott forsook his middle-class upbringing as a teenager to join a travelling rodeo. Embarrassed by his family name, he dubbed himself Buck Elliott, before adopting the less-mannered Jack. In 1949 he met and befriended Woody Guthrie, who in turn became his mentor and prime influence. Elliott travelled and sang with Guthrie whenever possible, before emerging as a talent in his own right. He spent a portion of the 50s in Europe, introducing Americas folk heritage to a new and eager audience and recording material for Topic Records, often in partnership with Derroll Adams. By the early 60s he had resettled in New York where he became an inspirational figure to a new generation of performers, including Bob Dylan.
