Biography
This duo was the first act to emerge from Grand Central Records, a label that has reflected the confident cosmopolitanism of post-rave Manchester, England since its inception in 1995. Mark Rae, former manager of the Fat City record shop and co-founder of Grand Central, and Steve Christian enlisted female vocalist Veba to complete the full-time line-up a year later, although the emphasis is very much on collaboration in writing, recording and live performance. Contributions to the Grand Central compilations Frying The Fat and Central Heating attracted attention from the dance music press, and the 1998 debut Northern Sulphuric Soul fulfilled this early promise. The cool swagger of the singles Spellbound and All I Ask and Vebas assured delivery evoked the classy soul of Shara Nelsons solo work.
