Biography
6 March 1941, Remscheid, Germany. Once the holder of the dubious title of loudest saxophonist in the world, Brötzmann plays several varieties of saxophone and clarinet (including the Hungarian taragato) with awesome skill, power and intensity. He started playing dixieland at school but was more interested in art than music. While at art college he played in a semi-professional swing band. During this time music became more important to him, and he began to explore new areas of free improvised music. In 1966, he toured with Jazz Realities, including Carla Bley, Michael Mantler and Steve Lacy, and made his record debut in 1967 with Peter Kowald and Sven-Åke Johansson. In 1969 he, Kowald, Hans Reichel and several other musicians set up the FMP label as a co-operative, and ever since he has recorded a stream of outstanding albums for the label in various contexts from solo to big bands, though few have surpassed the ferocity of his octets 1968...
