Biography

13 July 1935, Pittsburg, California, USA. Escovedo began playing saxophone in high school, but switched to vibraphone before choosing a variety of percussion instruments as his true métier. His first professional engagement found him in a band on the same bill as Count Basie, an event that prompted him to settle there and then on a career in music. In 1970, together with his younger brother, Coke Escovedo, he formed Azteca, touring the country as support to Stevie Wonder. Before the band was dissolved Azteca and Pyramid Of The Moon were recorded, both for Columbia Records. Escovedo next joined Carlos Santana touring internationally for three years and appearing on Moonflower, Oneness and Inner Secrets.

Based in northern California, Escovedo has continued to record successfully, mostly for Concord Records’ Picante label. His daughter, Sheila E. , is also a gifted percussionist. Father and daughter have recorded together in a number...
