Biography
Walter Joseph Candoli, 28 June 1923, Mishawaka, Indiana, USA, d. 11 January 2008, Studio City, California, USA. Despite having learnt to play the bass and French horn by the time he was 12 years old, Candoli was by his mid-teens making his name as a trumpeter, working in swing era big bands where his musicianship made him a valuable sideman. At first he worked in the more commercial end of the music scene, playing in the bands of Sonny Dunham and Will Bradley / Ray McKinley. In 1942 Candoli was briefly with Benny Goodman and then worked with Tommy Dorsey, Freddie Slack, Teddy Powell, Alvino Rey and Charlie Barnet. Candolis precocity and startling technique (as a high-note man he was second only to Cat Anderson) first attracted the attention of jazz fans when he joined Woody Hermans First Herd.
