Anna Marie Duke, 14 December 1946, Elmhurst, New York, USA. A child actress, Duke first came to the fore in the 1959 Broadway play The Miracle Worker, in which she played Helen Keller. In 1962 she reprised the role on film, for which she became the youngest person ever to win an Academy Award. The following year she starred in her own US television situation comedy in which she played two roles as identical cousins. The programme became a great success (still seen in re-runs today) and lasted until 1966.
In 1965, Duke signed a recording contract with United Artists Records; her first single, Dont Just Stand There, was a teen-orientated ballad, reminiscent of Lesley Gore. It hit number 8 on the US charts and her follow-up, Say Something Funny, reached number 22 that same year.
