Biography

6 March 1941, Copenhagen, Denmark. Mikkelborg is a self-taught trumpeter who studied conducting at the Royal Music Conservatory, Copenhagen. After turning professional in 1960, he joined Danish Radiojazzgruppen (1963), of which he was the leader from 1967-72. He was also a member of Radioens Big Band from 1964-71. For both of these, he would write, arrange and conduct as well as play trumpet. In 1966, he formed a quintet with drummer Alex Riel that won first prize at the Montreux International Jazz Festival and played at the Newport Jazz Festival (1968). Then he led an octet called V8 (1970-75) and an outfit called Entrance (1975-85). Mikkelborg has also worked with band leaders George Russell, Gil Evans, George Gruntz, Mike Gibbs and Maynard Ferguson and a wide variety of musicians, including Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Don Cherry, Abdullah Ibrahim and Charlie Mariano.
