Biography
Chart-toppers in their native Finland, Nightwish was formed in 1996 by classically-trained vocalist Tarja Turunen (17 August 1977, Kitee, Finland), Tuomas Holopainen (b. 25 December 1976, Kitee, Finland; keyboards) and Emppu Vuorinen (b. Erno Matti Juhani Vuorinen, 24 June 1978, Kitee, Finland; guitar), as an acoustic trio. The addition of Jukka Nevalainen (b. 21 April 1978, Finland; drums) signalled the bands move into metallic territory. Initial demos were recorded and the band secured a recording contract with the Spinefarm label, making their debut in 1997 with the single The Carpenter and the album Angels Fall First. An atmospheric affair, it showcased Turunens abilities and also demonstrated the bands folk leanings.
