Biography
15 June 1940, Eugene, Oregon, USA. Well established in the Pacific north-west as a distinctive jazz singer, Kings reputation was first established in the early 60s when she moved to San Francisco, there becoming involved in the local jazz scene, chiefly at the Jazz Workshop, which is where she met Sonny King, joined his band, and also took his name. Among other artists with whom she worked in San Francisco are Vince Guaraldi, John Handy, Pony Poindexter, and Pharoah Sanders. Around this time, she also encountered Jon Hendricks, who became a major influence and with whom she studied. In the mid-60s she toured Playboy Clubs and also appeared in glossy Las Vegas productions. From the early 70s she was temporarily less active in music, busily raising her three sons, although she was able to continue singing, often at the Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon.
