Mikhail Alperin, 7 November 1956, Kamenets-Podolsky, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Ukraine. Raised in Moldavia, Alperin played piano from childhood, studying classical music. Taking to jazz around 1980 he formed a quartet, drawing his repertoire from contemporary jazz flavoured with Moldavian folk music. He moved to Moscow in the early 80s, playing with rock bands and leading the Moscow Art Trio, which included French horn and flügelhorn player Arkady Shilkloper, with whom he also worked in duo, and singer Sergei Starostin. In the early 90s Alperin relocated to Norway, joining the faculty at Oslos Norwegian Academy of Music. He continued to perform and record with Shilkloper as well as saxophonists Tore Brunborg and John Surman, bass player Terje Gewelt and drummer Jon Christensen. Alperins trio in the mid-00s featured Shilkloper and cellist Anja Lechner.
