Biography

10 August 1948, London, England. Clarke first attracted attention playing guitar in the south London-based duo Killing Floor, with Bill Thorndycraft (vocals/harmonica), in 1968, soon thereafter expanding the band with Lou Martin (piano/organ), who left after about a year, Stuart MacDonald (bass) and Bazz Smith (drums). They made two well-received albums, Killing Floor, in 1969, and Out Of Uranus the following year, both reissued by Repertoire Records in 2002. Other personnel changes saw Ray Owen (vocals), Lynton Naiff (piano/organ), Mick Hawksworth (bass), and Rod De’Ath and Tony Fernandez (drums) in the band. Killing Floor played in London and elsewhere in the UK backing American bluesman Freddie King and also jammed with other visitors, including Howlin’ Wolf.
