Biography

7 December 1960, Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Shipp played piano from early childhood, going on from the University Of Delaware to study at the Berklee College Of Music and the New England Conservatory Of Music. He also studied privately with Dennis Sandole. As a performer, his reputation grew through the 80s and into the 90s as a member of the New York musical underground. He made numerous albums with David S. Ware and was also with Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory.

Shipp’s recording debut as leader came in 1990 and thereafter, a wider audience discovered his talent. Performing in a post-bop mode and showing an aptitude and liking for the avant garde, Shipp’s fluent command of his instrument is apparent from Before The World, recorded live in Berlin in 1995.
