1953, Wivenhoe, Essex, England. In many ways the English equivalent of prolific American home recording artists R. Stevie Moore and Jad Fair, Newell has maintained his position at the (distant) sidelines of the pop industry for over three decades. Living in the quiet village of Wivenhoe, Essex, Newell broke into music in the early 70s with the Colchester, Essex-based glam-rock group, the Mighty Plod and then in the late 70s with the Stray Trolleys. In 1980, he released a one-off solo single ‘Young Jobless’/‘Sylvie In Toytown’. He spent most of the 80s recording charming indie pop with the Cleaners From Venus, with the occasional solo release in-between, including 1983’s ‘Two For The Winter’ cassette single, the cassette album Songs For A Fallow Land in 1985, and 1987’s The April Fool EP.
