Biography

8 January 1955, New York City, New York, USA. Mazur’s parents were a Danish and American couple and from the age of six, she grew up in Denmark. In her early teens she was with a number of bands, playing piano and singing, but gradually shifted her attention to percussion. Although she studied percussion at the Royal Danish Conservatory, she was largely self-taught and by the late 70s her abilities were such that she was comfortable in the company of artists such as Irène Schweizer and Lindsay Cooper as a member of Feminist Improvising Group. In the early 80s Mazur had her own all-women group, Primi Band, working in various aspects of the performing arts, and she formed a quartet with saxophonist Uffe Markussen. She also played in Six Winds with Alex Riel and with other contemporary jazz and improvising artists such as Arild Andersen, Pierre Dørge, Palle Mikkelborg and John Tchicai.
