USA. One of the new wave of folk musicians to emerge from Nevada City in California in the early years of the twenty-first century, singer-songwriter Sioux established herself working alongside kindred spirits Brightblack Morning Light and Alela Diane. Raised by bluegrass loving parents, Sioux did not take up the guitar until her mid-teens. Her songwriting career developed, almost by accident, when she began writing on a school trip to Argentina. After leaving school she hooked up with fellow musicians around Nevada City and became associated with the clumsily titled freak folk scene, collaborating with her childhood friend and fellow singer-songwriter Diane. Sioux also worked with Nathan Shineywater and Rachael Hughes of Brightblack Morning Light, helping record their Matador Records debut in 2006.
