Biography
12 June 1936, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA. Born into a musical family, Belgrave took up the trumpet at the age of six. In his mid-teens he began playing professionally and was encouraged by, among others, Clifford Brown. When he was in his late teens he joined Ray Charles, playing regularly with the band through the mid- to late 50s and retaining a continuing association for several more years beyond that. In the early 60s, Belgrave was involved with forward thinking musicians in New York City although he eventually made Detroit his centre of operations. There, he worked extensively in the recording studios, becoming a valued player in countless Motown Records releases. During the 60s and on through into the 90s, with a hiatus in the 80s, Belgrave also played in support to an impressive roster of artists from the worlds of jazz and pop, among them Curtis Amy, Eric Dolphy, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, George Gruntz, Art Hodes, Wynton Marsalis, Charles Mingus,...
