Biography

Laurence Hammond (vocals/harmonica), David Robinson (lead guitar), Greg Druian (rhythm guitar), Tom Manning (bass) and Greg Dewey (drums) formed the Mad River Blues Band in 1965. Initially based in Yellow Springs, Ohio, USA, the group subsequently moved to California, by which time Druian had been replaced by Rick Bockner. The quintet, now dubbed simply Mad River, initially struggled to assert themselves, but a privately pressed EP helped to secure a series of gigs at prestigious San Franciscan venues. Mad River’s debut album was released in 1968. Although mastered too fast owing to a technical error, it remains an enthralling slice of vintage acid rock, where traces of Country Joe And The Fish and Quicksilver Messenger Service blend with Hammond’s reedy, quivering voice.
