Biography

18 July 1957, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Seaton first played guitar but switched to bass at the age of nine. While still at school he won numerous prizes for his playing. He studied music at the University of Oklahoma and simultaneously played with jazz groups in various clubs statewide. Late in 1980 he settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he became a regular member of pianist Steve Schmidt’s Trio and of the big band led by John Von Ohlen at the city’s Blue Wisp jazz club. The Schmidt group accompanied visiting jazzmen at the Blue Wisp, among them Al Cohn, Scott Hamilton, Mark Murphy, Maxine Sullivan, Carol Sloane and Teddy Wilson. In 1981 he took advantage of a National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Studies Fellowship to study in New York with Rufus Reid. In late 1984 he joined Woody Herman’s Young Thundering Herd and in July the following year began a two-year spell with the Count Basie Orchestra.
