Maria de Lurdes Pina Assunção, 31 July 1975, Lisbon, Portugal. Of Cape Verdean ancestry, her interest in her heritage, especially the music of the islands, developed late. In the early 90s she worked as a dancer and occasional actor, with Plano Seis. While singing in a studio backing group, she was invited by Juka to sing a duet on an album and this led to work with Tito Paris, Paulo Florès and Paulinho Vieira. Attracting attention on the vibrant Lisbon music scene, Lura attained a following and parallel appreciation for her songwriting. Her singing and dancing convey her deep feelings for the African element in her music. Many of her songs are in the genres of saudade and batuku (batuque). At the age of 21 she visited the islands for the first time, increasing her audience and her repertoire.
