Biography
The State Radio and Television choir from Bulgaria was founded in 1952, in Sofia, and included 15 singers and instrumentalists. This number has gradually increased as new voices have been selected from various folk festivals and song contests. As well as traditional pieces, the choir also performs the work of modern composers. The choir was brought to the attention of the British music press and public by the esoteric 4AD Records label who released their UK debut set in 1986. The ethereal nature of their singing drew some comparisons with that of 4ADs own Cocteau Twins, a connection with attracted a young audience. A Cathedral Concert (released on the Jaro label), was recorded in a church in Bremen, Germany, on 6 December 1987, during one of the choirs first trips to the West.
