Biography
16 November 1949, Cordell, Kentucky, USA. Raised from the age of three in Columbus, Ohio, Cordle heard a lot of country music in his early years. Owing in part to his great grandfather, who was an old time country fiddler, Cordle developed a strong leaning towards traditional country music. Back in Cordell from the age of eight, he formed a friendship with neighbour Ricky Skaggs and the two played and sang together, Cordle taking up guitar at 12. After leaving school, Cordle served in the US Navy for four years, there playing in a rock band, then attended Morehead State University, majoring in Accounting. Cordle formed the band Southern Portrait and later played in Homebrew. For some time he had been writing songs, and in 1983 Scaggs recorded his Highway 40 Blues.
