Biography
It was the chance meeting of John Guldberg and Tim Stahl at Werner Studios in Denmark at the end of the 70s that created Laid Back. The person they were waiting for did not turn up, so rather than waste any time they had a jamming session and bonded over their love of UK pop music. Experimentation in this field lead to the release of Maybe Im Crazy in 1980, followed the next year by their debut, Laid Back. The album was a mixture of disco with some slightly strange electronica mixed in. Laid Backs big breakthrough came in 1983 with the trippy reggae song, Sunshine Reggae, which was surprisingly popular in South America. Mainstream US radio stations did not catch on although the black radio stations loved the b-side, White Horse, a superb electro-funk tune. Prince caught onto the record and classed it as one of his favourites, which culminated with the release of When Doves Cry on the b-side.
