February 1982, London, England. Belying his skater-boy image, UK singer Leontiou emerged in 2004 as a silky-voiced purveyor of mid-tempo pop ballads. The son of first generation Greek-Cypriots, Leontiou grew up in north London and left school with no qualifications. He found work as a hairdresser but put most of his money towards recording demos in an attempt to fulfil his childhood ambition of becoming a singer. Teaming up with songwriting team Pete Wilkinson and Sarah Erasmus, he struggled to make an impact before a chance encounter with Mike Sault of Warner/Chappell led to a publishing contract. Sault’s connection with Dido offered Leontiou no favours, with critics rather casually dismissing him as an inferior male version of the hugely successful female artist.
