29 April 1943, Berlin, Germany. A figure in Hamburg’s bohemian circle, Voormann befriended the Beatles during their residence at the city’s famed Star Club, chiefly through a mutual interest in art shared with Stuart Sutcliffe, the band’s original bass player. Voormann subsequently took up the same instrument on arriving in the UK to join Paddy Chambers (ex-Big Three) and Gibson Kemp (ex-Kingsize Taylor And The Dominoes) in Paddy, Klaus And Gibson. However, although they enjoyed the management patronage of Brian Epstein, the trio was unable to make commercial headway. Voormann subsequently designed the distinctive sleeve of the Beatles’ album Revolver, before replacing Jack Bruce in Manfred Mann in July 1966.
