Biography

Formed in 1974 in San Francisco, California, USA, Kingfish were one of the city’s most popular live attractions during the late 70s. Founder members Matt Kelly (guitar, vocals) and Chris Herold (drums) first worked together in the 60s in the New Delhi River Band. In 1968 they formed Horses who recorded an album for White Whale Records. This group’s lead guitarist Bobby Hoddinot joined Kelly and Herold in 1973 in Lonesome Janet, along with Nick Ward (keyboards). When Dave Torbert (bass, ex-New Riders Of The Purple Sage and New Delhi Blues Band) was added to the line-up in 1974, Lonesome Janet became known as Kingfish. Ward died in 1974, after which Grateful Dead guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir joined the remaining musicians, boosting their popularity overnight.
