18 July 1966, Syracuse, New York, USA. Born into a musical family, both parents being classical musicians, Oberlin made her first public appearance at the age of six in an opera. During her childhood she sang classical and theatre music and also played classical piano, cello and flute. Her teenage years found her singing with bands that played in various styles, including rock, new wave, and punk. Her continuing studies brought her degrees in English Literature and in Theatre but throughout this period she continued to study voice. Her professional performances ranged widely, including appearances in acting roles, including stage, independent and feature films, and commercials, and on television and in nightclubs. Oberlin’s early influences included a diverse range of singer, and she has cited in particular Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Annie Ross, and Elvis Costello.
