Jutta Hipp / Zoot Sims

Decades: 1950s 1990s 2000s

4 February 1925, Leipzig, Germany, d. 7 April 2003, New York City, New York, USA. Although her musical career was quite brief, Hipp made a big impression in post-war Europe. She studied piano formally as a child, taking an interest in jazz in her mid-teens. At the end of the war she formed her own small band, mostly playing bop. After playing throughout Europe, in the mid-50s she visited the USA where she led a trio that was completed by Peter Ind and Ed Thigpen. By the late 50s, however, Hipp had decided to concentrate upon being a painter, and later worked as a seamstress. On the evidence of her few recordings, Hipp’s decision to abandon professional music was purely a matter of personal choice and by no means an indication of either technical inability or lack of imaginative talent.
