Biography
7 February 1927, Montpellier, Languedoc-Roussillon, France. An actress and inimitable singer of the chanson, Gréco was born the daughter of a police chief and a mother who became a Resistance worker in 1939. After spending some time in prison during the Occupation when she was 15, Gréco took acting lessons, and began to dress in men’s black clothing - heavy overcoats and trousers, with polo neck sweaters - and cut her hair in a fringe. In the mid-40s she became a leading member of the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre’s intellectual Existentialist movement, which flourished in cafés such as Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit and Café Flore on Paris’ Left Bank. Sartre encouraged her to sing, and with her slightly raw-edged voice, attractive appearance and impressive stage presence, she soon became immensely popular in the world of cabaret.
