Biography
John Dudley Leyton, 17 February 1939, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex, England. Originally a small-time actor in the television series Biggles, Leytons good looks won him a recording contract with Top Rank Records. Backed by the strong management of Robert Stigwood and talented producer Joe Meek, he recorded Tell Laura I Love Her, but lost out to the chart-topping Ricky Valance. A second flop with Girl On The Floor Above was followed by the timely intervention of songwriter Geoff Goddard with the haunting Meek production Johnny Remember Me. Stigwood ensured that the song was incorporated into Leytons latest television role as pop singer Johnny St. Cyr in Harpers West One. The nationwide exposure focused attention on the record and its otherworldly ambience and elaborate production were enough to bring Leyton a UK number 1.
