19 June 1968, Binghamton, New York, USA. Listening to music from an early age, Hollenbeck took up drums. While studying at Binghamton University he met visiting musicians, who included Art Blakey, which helped develop Hollenbeck’s already driving enthusiasm, and he later studied at the Eastman School of Music, from where he graduated in 1991 after having recorded with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and the Eastman Jazz Ensemble. At Eastman, his studies incorporated both percussion and composing. He also studied composing with Bob Brookmeyer, with whom he also performed and recorded in a band co-led by the trombonist and Kenny Wheeler.

Hollenbeck’s stylistic range is striking; from jazz to klezmer, contemporary classical to Latin. Among his klezmer appearances have been those with David Krakauer and Frank London.
