Biography

1944, Florida, USA. A versatile individual, Helms was a member of the Fort Jackson Army Band during his spell in the forces. He forged a singing career after his national service, and was a frequent performer on the popular Merv Griffin US television show. He also appeared in the hippie musical Hair. Helms’ only notable chart success came in 1973 with the smooth and soulful ‘Gonna Make You An Offer You Can’t Refuse’, the title of which was taken from a line in the Francis Ford Coppola movie The Godfather. The record faltered in the US charts but reached the UK Top 10. He was, however, unable to repeat this one-off hit.
