Biography
1967, Seattle, Washington, USA. Black played drums from an early age, initially practicing to records by rock bands. By the age of 14, he was playing semi-professionally with a band most of whose members were a couple of years older. They included Andrew DAngelo, Brad Shepik and Chris Speed. During this period he became aware of and was influenced by jazz from an earlier period, ranging through late swing era big bands, hard bop and other areas of contemporary music. A little later he studied at the Berklee College Of Music, and following graduation in 1992 he settled in New York City. Thereafter he established a pattern of commonly working with adventurous and open-minded young musicians. Among jazz groups with which he has worked are Tim Bernes Bloodcount (with Speed and Michael Formanek), Ellery Eskelins trio (with accordionist Andrea Parkins), and Dave Douglas Tiny Bell Trio (of which the third member is Shepik).
