22 November 1981, Montclair, New Jersey, USA. After learning to play the flute and tuba as a child, Youngs first picked up the guitar at high school and was quickly inspired to begin writing her own songs. After completing a degree in studio composition, she was employed in sales and marketing at Shanachie Records, while spending her evenings playing solo gigs in and around New York City. Her debut, Batten The Hatches, showcased her candid singer-songwriter lyrics against an inventive backdrop of acoustic folk, electronica, pop and country. The album was released by the independent label Sauropod Records in 2005 but did not begin to attract a wider listening audience until the expletive-filled ‘Fuck Was I’ was used in the second series of the Showtime television series Weeds.
