Biography
Judith Colantone, 28 October 1941, Youngstown, Ohio, USA. Clayton first attracted attention in New York in the early 60s. In bringing radical concepts to jazz singing, she excited musicians, critics and discerning audiences. During the 60s and succeeding decades, she worked with many leading figures of the contemporary music scene, among them Muhal Richard Abrams, Jane Ira Bloom, John Cage, Stanley Cowell, Jerry Granelli, Fred Hersch, Don Lanphere, Paul McCandless, Bobby McFerrin, Gary Peacock, Julian Priester, Steve Reich, and Nana Vasconcelos. She also became a member of Vocal Summit, alongside Urszula Dudziak, Norma Winstone and Michele Hendricks. With this internationally acclaimed vocal group and as a solo artist, she played many important venues in the USA and Europe, among them New Yorks Lincoln Center and Sweet Basil and the North Sea Jazz Festival.
