Biography

1 January 1932, New York City, New York, USA. Reilly was raised in a musical environment, his mother having been a professional pianist before marriage and who then became a music teacher. He studied classical music from the age of seven, turning to jazz piano in his mid-teens. After a fleeting brush with a job in commerce he turned to the study of music, first attending Brooklyn College where he earned a degree in liberal arts and then at the Manhattan School of Music before working continuing private study with Stan Freeman. Although Freeman did not customarily take students he made an exception in Reilly’s case and this tuition coincided with his last year at MSM. During service in the US Navy in the early 50s, where he played in a navy band, Reilly met Lennie Tristano while on leave in New York and was able to persuade the pianist to provide him with study material he could take with him to a posting in Puerto Rico.
