Biography
c.1958, Saigon, Vietnam. Many members of Thanh’s family were traditional Vietnamese musicians, her father, Huu Phuoc, being a well-known singer with Cai Luong, a movement formed in 1916 to preserve the country’s heritage of traditional musical theatre. Her sister, Huong Lan, is also a Cai Luong singer as well being a performer of modern music. Huong Thanh has developed an interesting way in which to blend the different traditions of Vietnamese and western singing. In the former there is a pronounced relationship between melody and words. Using one of six linguistic tones it is possible for an accomplished singer to give different meanings to the same syllable depending upon the pitch used. When she was 10, Huong Thanh began studying Cai Luong at home and at 13 was attending formal classes in Saigon music schools. She made her first public performance at age 16.
