Biography
17 September 1918, Lyons, France, d. 10 June 1990. Rostaing played several reed instruments, working mostly in provincial bands until 1939 when he went to Paris. In the capital he attracted a great deal of attention, capturing an even wider audience owing to records made with the Quintette Du Hot Club De France. He was with the Quintette for most of the 40s, a period during which he also played in big bands with Django Reinhardt and led his own small groups. As the war ended he began to take note of developments in bop. Simultaneously with his career as a jazz instrumentalist, playing mostly clarinet, Rostaing also composed music for films and played classical music. His technical facility was noteworthy but he played with an uncomplicated charm on small group jazz performances.
