Biography
Michael Mann, 17 March 1954, d. December 1986, Los Angeles, California, USA. Hollywood Fats must be considered the father of the modern west coast blues guitar. Having dropped out of school, he spent years on the road where he played with artists including J.B. Hutto, John Lee Hooker, Albert King and Muddy Waters. When Fats returned to Los Angeles he formed the Hollywood Fats Band in the mid-70s. In 1979 the group, which included Larry Taylor (ex-Canned Heat), Al Blake, Fred Kaplan and Richard Innes, recorded Hollywood Fats. Two years later Fats joined the band of his friend James Harman and recorded several albums, and later recorded with Smokey Wilson (88th Street Blues 1983), Rod Piazza (Harpburn 1986), and William Clarke (Tip Of The Top 1987). In 1986 Hollywood Fats was drafted into the Blasters, with whom he spent his final months before suffering a fatal heart attack at the age of 32.
