Biography
Irving Herbert Pomeroy III, 15 April 1930, Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA, d. 11 August 2007, Rust Island, Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. After extensive studies at what later became known as the Berklee College Of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Pomeroy joined the faculty to become one of the most respected teachers of the trumpet in jazz. His experience as a performer included work with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Stan Kenton and, although he also played in small groups with Charlie Parker and others, it is in a big band context that he made his greatest mark. Numerous contemporary jazz stars have graduated from Berklee, many of them paying tribute to Pomeroys contribution to their musical education. His big bands were usually formed from college students and graduates and they maintained an enviably high standard of musicianship.
